Site context
The site is the 100 m long Hulimavu Lake road Junction, consisting of the 2 intersections, one at Cave Temple Road and another at Begur Hulimavu. The Junction includes a bus stop and an auto-stand at the road island informally created around the Shri Satyanarayana Swamy Temple, known to be a 1000-year-old Ram Temple. This area was originally part of a traditional village square and now includes 5 temples, 4 schools and Hullimavu lake in the immediate vicinity of the junction. This is a high-traffic, high-speed corridor and is also used by residents as an access road to walk to the lake.
Issues
The ill-designed carriageways and traffic flows lead to frequent accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians. There is no safe pedestrian crossing infrastructure, and footpaths are encroached upon by shop spillage and vendors, leaving no space for pedestrians. The bus stop in the road island causes buses to wait in the middle of the junction, creating blind corners for on-coming traffic and unsafe drop off and pick up for bus users.
Priority Interventions
Create a contemporary urban plaza, in memory of the former village square, that respects the site's historicity and addresses the dense traffic flow through the area. Streamline the carriageway to clearly delineate the public realm Relocate the bus stand and auto stand to reduce pedestrian-vehicular conflict. Clear the encroachment and obstructions by shops and vendors to make the footpaths usable and visibalise the park entrance. Install information and navigation signage to nearby landmarks Create seating spaces
