Site context

The site is 1-km neighborhood road stretch in HBR Layout adjacent to a stormwater drain that connects several residential pockets in the area. Despite being a vital connector for the community, it lacks green cover and pedestrian infrastructure. Given its disuse, the area is used for dumping garbage, construction debris, and leaving vehicles parked illegally.

Issues

  • The edge along the rajakaluve is completely underutilised and in poor condition. It is filled with garbage, construction debris, and muddy waste, creating health and safety concerns.

  • The pedestrian bridge is very narrow, uninviting and feels unsafe.

  • The junction dividing the public space site lacks pedestrian infrastructure to allow safe crossing.

  • The fencing being installed along the rajakaluve will block precious public space and only create space for continued dumping.

Priority Interventions

Transform the neglected 1 km neighborhood road into a beautiful, slow, and walkable community street that promotes active mobility, social interaction, environmental sustainability, and neighbourhood pride.

  1. Remove legacy waste and identify appropriate waste management solutions like kasa kiosks on site or improved source collection.

  2. Convert the road into a "Slow Street" zone (max 20 km/h) with signage, street markings, and traffic calming measures

  3. Beautify the street - add greening, install benches and rest spaces, community garden, street art on walls etc

  4. Making the space universally accessible for all age groups and abilities.

  5. Construction or restoration of continuous footpaths on both sides

  6. Ease of crossing through mid-block and raised table-top crossings at intersections

To be checked

MLA is doing some fencing that needs to be re-thought.
