Site context

The site is a 700m stretch of Thanisandra Main Road from RKH 1st Main Road to VIBGYOR School Road. The character of Thanisandra Main is dominated by its traffic, which comprises both intra-neighbourhood movement and vehicles moving between the outer ring road and the airport. The road is starting to be commercialised; there are largely small shops, and two schools, Hegde Nagar Public School and Rio, are present in this stretch.

Issues

  • The carriage way and drains in Thanisandra Main have been recently developed but the footpath has been left undeveloped.

  • Vehicle parking and shop extensions have haphazardly encroached the public space. There is also little to no shade in this street segment.

Priority Interventions

  1. Redesign the footpath and public space to create a pedestrian-friendly, climate-resilient street with all necessary amenities, future-proofed against growing development challenges, and that supports the neighbourhood's identity.

- Wide footpaths with universal accessibility and bus shelters

- Parking management

- Avenue trees with percolation pits.

- Public toilet and drinking water and rest spaces for municipal and gig workers

2. Vending zones with waste management facilities

3. Social spaces to rest and wait (especially near schools)

  1. Safe pedestrian crossing infrastructure at : Thanisandra Main road x RKH 1st main rd; Thanisandra Main road x 1 st Main road; Thanisandra Main road x Vibgyor School road

  2. Safe school zone around Hegde Nagar Public School and Rio, following SRTS guidelines

To be checked

Check if there is a plan to redevelop the road - perhaps as a service road
