Creating a Neighborhood Kattes

Area / Length:

50 sqm

Main access road:

100 Feet Road

Nominee:

Samvad Design Studio

Budget

₹ 10-50 lakhs

Priority Interventions

  • The proposal is a contemporary reinterpretation of a traditional kaṭṭe, installed around existing trees at all 3 sites, to encourage children, families, and passers-by to lounge and relax. The design includes a plaque to highlight the horticultural information of the trees

  • Katte in site 3, to also include a public toilet on public land at the junction of Link road x 6th main road, which needs to be universally accessible with ramps and signage.

  • Use durable, low-maintenance materials suited for everyday public use.

Site context

Site 1 : 136

The site is located in a quiet residential area at the 80ft road and 1st main junction in Kodihalli. The katte also has a small temple and an auto stand. The footpaths along the katte are broken at this location and along the nearby 80ft road stretch. There are also no social spaces present on the streets for the residents to hang out and meet each other

Site 2:  144

The site is near a bus stop and the Hopcom at CMH Park, located at the KFC junction, a major landmark for the neighbourhood. This spot is also the pick-up and drop-off point for city buses and private inter-city buses. The site experiences very high foot traffic, and the seating and shade for people waiting for a bus are inadequate. At night, the area becomes dark and feels unsafe.

Site 3:  142

The link road is a quiet residential road that serves as the entry for 2 playgrounds (including the cricket ground) and the children’s park. Residents come to these play areas from all around the neighbourhood. Footpaths are broken with street litter at several spots. No spaces to sit and rest around for those visiting the playgrounds. The edge of the cricket ground along Link Road is overgrown and untidy, and is often used for public urination.

Issues

  • There are no social spaces along the street for residents to gather or interact.

  • Footpaths at this location and along the nearby 80-ft road stretch are broken.
