Importance of the site
We are currently building a pilot project on sustainable waste management for commercial areas under the Zero Waste Street Initiative at Church Street. As part of this model, we've already deployed two second-shift Pourakarmikas (sweepers) from 3 PM to 11 PM to ensure ongoing street cleanliness, and installed dustbins made out of recycled multilayer plastic to promote responsible waste disposal.
However, a key gap remains is the lack of a designated area for temporary waste collection and a resting space for the Pourakarmikas . The open space in question, currently misused as a dumping ground and smoking zone, is strategically located and has the potential to support the operational backbone of the initiative.
Developing this space is critical not only to prevent misuse but to strengthen the infrastructure needed to implement and demonstrate a scalable, sustainable waste management model for other commercial neighborhoods in Bengaluru.
Proposed idea / vision:
As part of the Namma Bengaluru Namma Koduge initiative, UnboxingBLR Foundation has adopted Church Street, and we at Let’s Be The Change (LBTC) have been working alongside them as the waste management partner, in collaboration with BBMP, for the past four months. Together, we are proud to support Bengaluru’s first commercial street to implement a second shift of street sweeping staff operating from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM—a significant step toward maintaining round-the-clock cleanliness.
In addition to routine cleaning, we are actively beautifying all existing dump sites on Church Street. One key intervention includes the transformation of a specific dump spot into a storage and resting kiosk for BBMP Pourakarmikas and our support staff. This is crucial, as the ward currently lacks a designated resting or utility space for ground workers.
We have already discussed this plan with the Zonal Commissioner and Assistant General Manager (AGM) of the division, and have received BBMP’s permission to proceed with the transformation. We are currently evaluating the structure type—either a solid wall unit with a door or a steel structure (reference image shared below)—and are in active discussion with UnboxingBLR Foundation to finalize the design and implementation plan. .
