Importance of the site

The Pipeline road stretching more than 2 km in various parts of the city is mostly left untouched, undeveloped and untreated. They are appropriated in some places informally for parking and left as dump-yards too. Here, we have considered a small stretch which is fenced with the growth of wild shrubbery. It forms a median with a 18m main road flanking it and a residential street on the other side. The area of intervention is about 120m long stretch forms a barrier between two neighborhoods. A break in this vastness may activate the space to include residents of the adjoining neighborhoods. The chosen stretch of land includes high barricades/fences. This has to be removed wherever possible to visually and physically connect the residents/users.

Proposed idea / vision:

We conducted a public participation exercise at the site. The participatory exercise included consultations with the residents of the area to share their suggestions for the area of intervention and the public outreach program encouraged them to suggest a suitable title. Also how would the residents be willing to help through financial contribution, help in construction etc. to test, to what extent the locals may want to be involved/ aligned to our vision of making a thriving public space. A conceptual design of public park with walking track was designed that caters to 6000+ residents of Balaji layout. Key opportunity lies in the scalability of the project. Similar interventions can be implemented at various such stretches of the pipeline within the city. A feedback on first draft of design and the comments received were pondered upon to arrive at the final design decision to prepare estimate and to develop implementation strategy. The respondents were satisfied with the design with encouraging response over design and activities allocated. It was suggested to keep the fence intact for safety reasons by few respondents along with few other improvements such as rethinking the entrance, including more children’s play areas. These suggestions were pondered upon before they were incorporated in revised draft for implementation.
