Importance of the site
The area near Choudeshwary Bus Station in Mathikere, adjacent to JP Park, has organically evolved into a bustling local market. It primarily serves surrounding neighborhoods through the informal presence of vendors—especially those dealing in fruits, vegetables, and essential goods. However, the market currently lacks proper planning, sanitation, and organized infrastructure.
This proposal envisions revitalizing the space not only as a functional market zone but also as a community gathering and green space — enhancing the vibrancy and resilience of the neighborhood.
Proposed idea / vision:

Submitted Under: BBMP Revitalizing Public Spaces Campaign
Proposed by: ESAF Foundation
1. Background and Context
2. Vision Statement
To transform the current unorganized market area into a planned, inclusive, and vibrant community market square that integrates urban food security, local livelihoods, and community well-being through infrastructure upgrades, vendor support, and the creation of a community edible garden.
3. Objectives
Organize and formalize vending areas for diverse local vendors.
Create a public-friendly market with improved basic infrastructure.
Establish a community garden to demonstrate local food production and engage residents.
Promote sustainable urban practices such as waste management and green mobility.
Foster a vibrant, multi-use public space that promotes community interaction.
4. Proposed Interventions
A. Infrastructure and Market Facilities
Structured vending zones with eco-friendly stalls and uniform design.
Essential amenities: drinking water, public toilets, handwashing stations.
Covered sitting spaces and shaded rest areas for customers and senior citizens.
Solid waste management system including waste segregation bins and composting unit.
Lighting and safety features with solar lights and CCTV for evening operations.
Designated parking space for bicycles, two-wheelers, and handcarts.
B. Community Garden Integration
Establishment of a small community edible garden within or adjacent to the market area.
Raised beds or planters for growing seasonal vegetables, herbs, and medicinal plants.
Managed by a local community group or vendor collective with technical support.
Acts as a learning space for children, residents, and vendors on sustainable urban farming.
Compost generated from market waste can be used for soil enrichment.
Educational signboards to create awareness about local food systems and nutrition.
C. Inclusive Community and Vendor Engagement
Space allocation for women-led SHGs, organic sellers, and micro-entrepreneurs.
Vendor training programs on hygiene, product display, waste reduction, and digital tools.
An open plaza to host weekend cultural events, farmers' days, or seasonal markets.
Community noticeboard to display announcements, health camps, or local initiatives.
5. Intended Outcomes
Cleaner, more accessible, and better-managed public market space.
Increased economic stability for local vendors through improved customer experience.
Strengthened urban food security through hyperlocal production and access.
Increased community ownership and social cohesion through gardening and shared spaces.
Creation of a replicable model combining market vibrancy + community sustainability.
6. Conclusion
Revitalizing the market space near Choudeshwary Bus Station offers a timely opportunity to reinforce traditional markets as anchors of sustainable, inclusive urban living. By incorporating community-led edible gardens alongside essential market infrastructure, we can reimagine this space as a model for "market-plus" public space planning — merging livelihood, greenery, health, and community in the heart of the city.
