Importance of the site

This street plays a vital role in the life of the neighborhood, serving as a dynamic corridor with a rich mix of commercial activity, religious functions, and transportation movement. However, despite its importance, the space is currently disorganized, congested, and underutilized, demanding urgent attention and thoughtful urban intervention. The presence of a bus stand along the street contributes significantly to traffic congestion, further intensified by unregulated on-street parking and poorly maintained street edges. These conditions not only hinder smooth vehicular movement but also make it unsafe and uncomfortable for pedestrians, especially during peak hours. Adding to the complexity, the central island on the street hosts a row of mature, old-growth trees—a unique and valuable ecological and visual asset. Unfortunately, these trees are enclosed within metal grills, cutting them off from meaningful public use or engagement. Instead of being a shaded refuge or green spine, this potential green public space remains inaccessible and disconnected from the street’s life. Importantly, this street is regularly used by specially challenged individuals, especially visually impaired groups, who walk along this route during mornings and evenings. The current lack of inclusive design features—such as tactile paving, clear signages, and uninterrupted walking paths—makes their navigation challenging and unsafe. Moreover, the absence of signages and clear wayfinding elements creates confusion for pedestrians and visitors alike. Revitalizing this space is not just a design opportunity—it is a social responsibility. It is essential to reimagine this street as a safe, inclusive, and accessible public realm that balances mobility, ecology, and human experience. By addressing its functional challenges and embracing its unique character, this space can be transformed into a thriving, people-centric street—a true asset to the neighborhood and the city at large.

Proposed idea / vision:

Our vision is to transform this underutilized urban space into an inclusive, and sustainable neighborhood public realm that fosters community, celebrates local culture, and enhances everyday life. By reimagining the area as a multi-functional, pedestrian-friendly hub, we aim to create a safe and accessible space where people of all ages and backgrounds can connect, relax, and thrive.
