Importance of the site

1. Site Context and Background The identified stretch beneath the Hennur Flyover spans approximately 500 meters, currently underutilized despite partial development and fencing done by BBMP. The site is shaded due to the flyover structure and mostly unused by the public, although irrigation facilities already exist, offering an opportunity for urban greening and beautification. The space can be transformed into an Urban Green Garden designed specifically for low-light plants and air-purifying species, serving as a green buffer in a highly trafficked area, enhancing environmental quality and visual appeal while deterring misuse and encroachments.

Proposed idea / vision:

2. Vision Statement To transform the under-flyover stretch at Hennur Junction into a lush, climate-resilient Urban Green Garden that improves air quality, reduces urban heat, and creates a visually appealing, safe, and accessible public space for the community. 3. Objectives • Convert the unutilized flyover space into a dense green corridor. • Improve air quality and microclimate using scientifically chosen plant species. • Prevent misuse and ensure active maintenance of the site. • Demonstrate an innovative model of under-flyover greening and beautification. • Enhance aesthetic value along the Hennur main road corridor. 4. Proposed Interventions A. Landscape Design and Beautification • Design a layered green garden using shade-tolerant and air-purifying plants. • Use raised planters, vertical garden walls, and troughs along pillars. • Introduce pebble paths or stone-paved walkways for visual coherence. • Incorporate artistic elements like murals, sculptures, or recycled art to increase community pride. B. Irrigation and Maintenance • Utilize the existing irrigation line for a drip or mist-based watering system. • Set up a basic water tank with timer-based irrigation to ensure low-maintenance upkeep. • Assign park rangers or community gardeners under BBMP or local NGO partnerships. 5. Recommended Plants for Low Sunlight & Air Purification Ground and Raised Planters (Low Maintenance): • Asparagus Fern • Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum) • Snake Plant (Sansevieria) • Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) • Areca Palm • Syngonium • Boston Fern Vertical Garden/Climber Species: • Money Plant (Pothos) • English Ivy • Philodendron • Betel Leaf (Vine option) Native & Pollinator-Friendly Options (End Sections with Some Light): • Ixora • Tulsi (Holy Basil) • Plumbago • Lantana camara All selected plants require low to moderate light, are proven to improve air quality, and absorb vehicular pollutants such as formaldehyde, benzene, and carbon monoxide. 6. Community and Educational Engagement • Set up plant name boards and educational signages explaining the environmental benefits. • Invite school and college students for nature walks, art installations, or awareness activities. • Encourage public art and mural painting by local artists or students along the flyover pillars. 7. ESAF’s Involvement ESAF Foundation can provide: • Comprehensive design plans and detailed landscape layouts. • Selection and sourcing of appropriate plant species and layout structuring. • Lead community awareness activities, mural projects, and long-term engagement programs. • Support BBMP in building a maintenance model involving local residents and volunteers. 8. Expected Outcomes • A visually attractive urban garden in a previously underused and neglected space. • Improved local air quality and reduced dust levels along a high-traffic corridor. • Deterrence of anti-social activities through beautification and footfall. • Replicable model for under-flyover greening projects across Bengaluru. 9. Conclusion The under-flyover stretch at Hennur Junction presents a powerful opportunity to demonstrate how functional greening and beautification can transform overlooked spaces into community and environmental assets. With proper planning, community involvement, and scientific planting, this green corridor can become a symbol of urban renewal and environmental stewardship.
