Importance of the site
Srirampura Railway Crossing was a vibrant link and social space between Srirampura, Venkateshpura, Sampigehalli, and Jakkur villages. Approximately 3-4 years ago, an underpass was built to divert traffic and subsequently closed the crossing to address the issues caused by increased road traffic and the number of trains passing through the junction. Due to this intervention, Venkateshpura and Sampigehalli village areas got cut off from Sriramrampura and Jakkur villages.
As a result, the circle, the underpass connecting the Hegde Nagar Road and KV Jayram Road, has developed haphazard traffic junctions and several blind spots, which are very unsafe. We came to this area in 2002 and live just one hundred meters from the railway crossing in Venkateshpura village. We wanted to do something about this change that has affected our whole neighborhood. That is the reason we think this space needs to be developed.
Proposed idea / vision:
The proposal aims to transform the former Srirampura Railway Crossing into a vibrant, inclusive public space that reconnects the villages of Srirampura, Venkateshpura, Sampigehalli, and Jakkur. The construction of the underpass connecting the Hegde Nagar Road and KV Jayram Road disrupted pedestrian access and created unsafe blind spots; this intervention seeks to restore safe connectivity, improve public safety, and enhance the area’s livability. The vision integrates environmental sustainability, community well-being, and local economic support to create a thriving neighborhood hub.
Key Ideas:
• Safe, accessible pathways- Improve pathways along all road networks to reconnect neighborhoods and promote walking and easier accessibility.
• Redesigned traffic flow and intersections in the MCECHS layout main road. The redesigned traffic flow and intersection at the MCECHS layout main road aim to ease congestion and improve safety near the underpass. The proposed roundabout at the junction aims to improve the road intersection for smoother vehicular movement and better pedestrian access. Elements like the corner tree towards the underpass and nearby hawkers are acknowledged in the design to ensure minimal disruption. The second proposed roundabout at KV Jairam main road at the 2nd crossroad intersection to introduce safe pedestrian/zebra crossings on all sides and improve safety, reduce congestion, and enhance overall mobility.
• Revival and development of parks and open spaces. The BBMP playground in the corner of MCECHS layout on the main road going towards Sampigehalli main road, will be transformed into green, active public spaces with native planting and comfortable seating, including play areas for children. The area abutting the 60-foot road in
front of the Ewest Skyway apartment is proposed as an open park with multipurpose zones, open-air fitness spaces, and shaded seating for seniors to enhance community well-being and social interaction.
• Designated vendor zones in front of the closed gate of the old railway crossings, at the junction of MCECHS layout main road, and Sampigehalli main road to support local livelihoods and re-enliven this. To improve the fluency, replace it with another vendor zone on the opposite site, on KV Jairam main road in front of the railway crossing, to the front of the East Skyway apartment on the west side, near the entrance to the proposed park.
• Bamboo plantations of suitable species along the leftover area between railway lines and abutting 60-foot road, and along the line connecting to Jakkur main road till the Railway parallel road as green buffers to absorb carbon, as
a sustainable and effective solution to improve air quality and enhance the urban environment.
• Improved Public Infrastructure: Upgrade streetlights, bus stops, drinking water points, public toilets, and dog shelters to enhance safety, hygiene, and comfort for all, including the floating population and animals.
• Basic amenities like the cleanup of clogged drains, providing proper stormwater drains, and sewage lines.
• Enhanced safety through better lighting, CCTV cameras, signage, and increased community presence through murals, art installations, etc.
