Importance of the site

Since the inauguration of Kempegowda Airport, North Bangalore has experienced significant road and flyover development. The loss of roadside trees, amenities, social spaces, and connections occurs when these flyovers, metrolines, and other infrastructure cross a neighborhood or village. These developments also create socially hostile environments and increase high-speed traffic, which severely impacts residents and small shop vendors, disturbing the social fabric of the area. Our Yelahanka-Bellary Road Flyover Junction, constructed a few years ago, is close to the city limits and has caused these losses. Through this intervention of revitalizing the spaces below the flyover and metro line, the community can reclaim and reuse these spaces effectively.

Proposed idea / vision:

This project reimagines the underused spaces beneath the Yelahanka flyover and the flyover and metro on Bellary Road, which are surrounded by several types of spaces, including educational institutions (such as Vidyanivas Pre- University College), gated communities (like Legacy Cirocco and Viswa Prakruthi Green Woods), and showrooms (including Renault Yelahanka and Tata Motors Cars Showroom), transforming them into a vibrant, inclusive public corridor. It introduces four distinct yet interconnected zones, each responding to specific user needs while promoting safety and engagement with local people, and it becomes a Recreational and cultural Activities space with parking, which is non-existent in North Bangalore at the moment. Key ideas: • EV Charging Stations: Multiple two- wheeler electric charging points to help delivery partners recharge their vehicles efficiently while taking a break. • Designated Parking Bays: Clearly marked, shaded parking spots exclusively for delivery bikes and scooters to reduce roadside congestion and improve accessibility. • Seating under flyover: Covered seating areas using eco-friendly bamboo structures offer a comfortable resting environment away from traffic and heat. • Shoulder Parking: Dedicated parking pockets are provided along the service road, allowing highway travelers to pull over safely for a short break. These parking spots are integrated into the green rest zone. • Bamboo Plantations: Rows of native bamboo species are planted to form a natural screen from the railway line, reduce noise, improve air quality, and enhance the visual appeal of the corridor. • Walkways: walking paths lined with bamboo and native trees create a comfortable and scenic route for pedestrians moving between neighborhoods, transit points, and public spaces. • Community Gathering Space: Shaded seating and informal gathering pockets. Opposite to Legacy Cirocco and Viswa Prakruthi, Green Wood offers residents a place to connect, relax, and participate in small community activities or discussions. • Children’s Play Area: A safe, inclusive, and eco-conscious play zone built with bamboo and other recycled materials invites children to explore. • Artworks Under-Bridge Pillar: The flyover’s structural pillars are treated as canvases for public art, featuring murals, traditional motifs, and community-created artworks. • Craft Stalls and Artisan Markets: Small kiosks and platforms are allocated for local artisans, craftspeople, and self-help groups to showcase handmade products, promoting regional culture and supporting sustainable livelihoods. • Refreshment Stalls: Strategically placed food kiosks offer a variety of local snacks, beverages, which also create an inviting street-food atmosphere that complements the cultural activities of the space. • Green Parks and Open Lawns: Landscaped gardens with native plants, grassy patches, and shaded rest zones allow for informal gatherings, relaxation, and recreational use. • Accessible and Inclusive Design: Ramps, seating space, tactile paths, and shaded seating ensure full accessibility, making the space usable for all, including children, elderly citizens, and persons with disabilities. • Night-Friendly Ambience: Soft, artistic lighting allows the space to remain active and safe after dark, encouraging pedestrians, performances, and food-based gatherings. • Interactive Bamboo Installations: U-turn slot under NH44 Bellary Road with Sculptural bamboo installations serve both aesthetic and educational purposes, showcasing the material’s versatility while also creating unique landmarks. • Safe Connectivity: Zebra crossings and clear connections to adjacent pedestrian routes and mobility hubs ensure a smooth, secure flow of movement between Zones and other parts of the under-flyover development. • Drinking Water Points: Refill stations provide clean and accessible drinking water, crucial for health and well-being. • Sanitation Facilities: Dedicated toilets are provided, designed for easy cleaning, accessibility, and 24/7 use. Hygiene is prioritized to serve the needs of the people. • CCTV Surveillance and Cleanliness: To ensure safety and comfort for the public and vendors alike, the area is monitored by CCTV cameras. • Dust bins: with dedicated waste bins and regular intervals and maintenance schedules to keep the space clean and inviting.
