Importance of the site

The site is situated within a rich urban context, surrounded by five temples, a lake, schools, an informal bus stop, local shops, eateries, and street vendors. At its heart lies a thousand-year-old Ram temple that continues to host an annual yatra, anchoring the space in deep historical and cultural significance. Originally part of a traditional village square, the area is now known as the Hulimavu Bus Stand—has evolved into a major junction connecting multiple arterial roads. The area has since undergone unplanned urban development, resulting in a chaotic and disorganized public space. The absence of planned urban development has led to a chaotic and disorganized environment. The convergence of high pedestrian footfall, heavy vehicular traffic, and informal commercial activity results in congestion, safety concerns, and a lack of accessible public space. For local residents, this translates into daily inconvenience, restricted mobility, and diminished quality of life in a space that was once a cohesive community square.

Proposed idea / vision:

Once a village square, the site now functions as an unstructured node with overlapping uses—an informal bus stand, a school zone, a local market, a cultural spine marked by five temples and an annual yatra, and a neglected lake edge often used as a dumping ground. The aim of the redevelopment is to bring clarity, identity, and thoughtful functionality to a space that has grown increasingly chaotic over time. This proposal envisions reorganizing the site into a contemporary urban plaza—one that respects the memory of its past while responding to present-day needs. Through layered public spaces, improved accessibility, safer transitions, and context-sensitive design, the intent is to create a more humane and usable junction that reflects the spirit of the community it serves. Mobility and safety remain critical concerns, with unregulated traffic, inadequate pedestrian infrastructure, and no clear zones for vendors or waiting commuters. The lake edge, too, holds potential to become a softer, shared public interface.
