Importance of the site

Kalyan Nagar Junction: Existing Conditions and Critical Challenges The Kalyan Nagar Junction, situated along the Outer Ring Road, occupies a crucial location within the urban mobility network of North-East Bengaluru. Despite its importance as a connector and transit node, the stretch currently suffers from a range of neglected landscape, infrastructure, and accessibility issues that significantly reduce its potential to serve the community effectively. 1. Green Buffers and Electrical Easement Zone The Outer Ring Road at this junction is flanked by linear green buffers, particularly prominent on the Northern side, which falls under the high-tension electric line easement zone. These green zones, rather than functioning as ecological or recreational corridors, have been reduced to underutilised and degraded landscapes. The area is: Overgrown with unmanaged vegetation. . Littered with debris and solid waste. . Poorly defined in terms of edges or designated pedestrian access points. . The absence of physical boundary clarity, compounded by broken fencing, has opened up informal entry points. This has encouraged illegal waste dumping, turning the buffer zone into a neglected, unsafe space rather than a shared public asset. These conditions foster not only environmental degradation but also contribute to negative social perceptions of the area. 2. Impact on Public Transport Access and Walkability Public infrastructure such as bus stops located along the Outer Ring Road become inaccessible or unsafe for pedestrians due to the lack of: . Continuous and protected footpaths. . Safe pedestrian crossings at junctions. . Lighting, seating, or shade infrastructure. . Barrier-free access, especially for seniors, children, and people with disabilities. . The overall pedestrian experience is fragmented, unsafe, and inconvenient, forcing many to either avoid public transport altogether or navigate dangerous road conditions. 3. Intersection of 7th Main Road and Outer Ring Road The intersection of Kalyan Nagar 7th Main and the Outer Ring Road is particularly problematic. This junction: . Handles high volumes of vehicular traffic, with no traffic calming or pedestrian-priority interventions. . Sits on topographically lower land, creating a natural depression in the terrain. . Lacks sufficient stormwater drainage infrastructure, which means surface runoff from the road and adjacent plots often accumulates here. . As a result, this junction becomes a flood-prone bottleneck, particularly during monsoon months. The combination of low terrain, poor drainage, and dense traffic leads to perennial waterlogging, which: Disrupts daily commuting. Damages road surfaces over time. Exacerbates traffic snarls and increases the risk of accidents. Further disincentivises pedestrian and non-motorised transport usage.

Proposed idea / vision:

An Opportunity for Reimagination Together, these issues point to an urgent need for a holistic redesign of the junction and its surrounding public spaces. With strategic interventions, this corridor could be transformed from a degraded service edge into a resilient, walkable, and ecologically integrated mobility and green infrastructure zone. Opportunities include: . Reclaiming green buffer zones as designed ecological corridors with stormwater-sensitive landscaping under the high-tension lines. . Upgrading pedestrian and public transit infrastructure to ensure safe, dignified, and inclusive access to bus stops and crossings. . Redesigning the junction's stormwater system, informed by topographic mapping and surface runoff analysis, to mitigate flooding risks. . Activating the edge through well-lit paths, fencing, community artwork, and regular maintenance to build ownership and discourage dumping. . Kalyan Nagar Junction holds the potential to become a model for infrastructure-oriented public space transformation—bridging mobility, ecology, and everyday urban life.
