Importance of the site
Moore Market, over a century old, is an iconic but underused market building in Fraser Town. With its colonial-era arches, tiled roofing, and rich local history, it represents a vital piece of Bengaluru's cultural fabric. However, neglect and disrepair have turned it into a forgotten space. Moore Market has great potential to be gently revived into a Neighbourhood Plaza — a shared community space grounded in heritage, public use, and local culture.
Proposed idea / vision:
Vision: To reimagine Moore Market as a low-cost, high-impact public square that welcomes residents of all ages to meet, relax, trade, and celebrate Fraser Town’s vibrant social and cultural life.
Key Principles & Interventions:
1. Heritage Respect & Repair
Preserve original structure: arches, tile roofs, façades
Basic repairs, repainting with traditional materials
Clean-up and removal of unsafe elements
2. Neighbourhood Plaza Creation
Convert underused open areas into shaded sitting spaces
Add benches, planters, and simple paving
Encourage informal gatherings and everyday use
3. Support to Local Vendors
Low-cost, flexible stalls for small traders and artisans
Weekend pop-up markets with minimal infrastructure
4. Cultural Activation
Space for storytelling, music, book swaps, art exhibits
Bulletin board for local news and community updates
Co-programming with schools and youth groups
Outcome: A vibrant, inclusive, and heritage-rich public space that reflects Fraser Town’s identity. A replicable model of soft, citizen-led urban renewal that aligns with BBMP’s efforts to catalogue and activate public spaces across Bengaluru.
