Priority Interventions
Creation of a fit-for-purpose food street, with water supply and waste collection facilities to keep the space clean, seating spaces, street lighting, clear walkway, and designation spaces for food stalls and parking.
Site context
The site is a 100m stretch of a 6th main road, abutting Old Airport Road that is a vibrant food street with changing vendors between morning, afternoon and evening timings. It serves as a highly reliable and affordable means for food for thousands of people working in the nearby hospitals, hotels and office complexes.
Issues
There are two main issues - walkability and hygiene. Pedestrians are forced to walk in the middle of the road since the customers from the food stalls completely occupy the footpath and also spill over on the road. While the shops do maintain individual dustbins, food waste litered around and accumulating near the drains remains a severe issue. The food waste also attracts rats which has resulted in the breaking down of the footpath. The situation only worsens during rains.
