Priority Interventions
Implementation of IRC 32 Safe Routes to School guidelines along 12th Main Road.
Introduce traffic calming measures, signage, and pedestrian crossings.
Removal of footpath obstructions and encroachments with shaded waiting areas near school entry points.
Clearance of dumped vehicles and designation of parking for private vehicles, and bicycles.
Make junctions safer through crossings, signage, kerbs, and other pedestrian safety infrastructure at 12th Main Road and HMT Main Road intersections
Site context
The site is a cluster of schools located along 12th Main Road, including multiple buildings of St. Lourdes English School, Vidhya Vaibhav School, and a government school. The road also adjoins a playground used by residents and students from all schools at various times. Many children rely on school buses, while others walk home.
Issues
12th Main Road, which runs parallel to HMT Main Road, experiences overspeeding by two-wheelers and mini-trucks.
Narrow roads and footpaths, encroached on by parked and dumped vehicles, make walking amid fast-moving traffic unsafe.
Dumped vehicles along the playground edge reduce available space for the numerous bicycles used by children.
