Priority Interventions

  • “The Artist's Bench Project”, also called “A Bench of One's Own”, seeks to empower disabled artists, children, and women artists to reclaim public spaces and collaborate with the community through art.

  • The bench will include features for rainwater storage and air purification.

  • Globally, public benches have served community needs. For example, Zimbabwe's "Friendship Bench" project uses benches as a platform for mental health support by providing talk therapy through trained community health workers.

  • There are two potential installation sites for this project: Inside the underutilised public library on 16th Cross, to revitalise the space and encourage community engagement with contemporary art and a black spot on 7th Cross.

Site context

The neighbourhood site area in Lakkasandra includes a public school, hospital, college, BOSCH, and the NIMHANS Public Convention Centre, all within walking distance.

Issues

  • Lakkasandra streets are congested with vehicles, providing limited space for pedestrians and seating.

  • Currently, youth, women, and children lack accessible community spaces and opportunities for creative engagement.
