Priority Interventions
● Enhance safety and visibility by removing opaque fencing, clearing legacy waste, adding cameras, and active programming. ● Install high fencing along the flyover edge to prevent garbage from being hurled from the top. ● Complete footpath development and cleaning on the east side from Banaswadi to the overpass. ● Redesign pedestrian crossings, ramps, signage, and traffic calming measures to highlight the crossing and improve access from Wheeler Road. ● Introduce public art to enliven the space.
Site context
The site comprises a pedestrian overpass and the under-Wheeler Road flyover space on the Cooke Town side. The overpass enhances pedestrian safety, however, the neglected condition has contributed to anti-social activity, reducing user comfort and discouraging passage. Recently, ITC fenced the ground-level area, and the Cooke Town community has pushed for better lighting and waste removal to restore safety and cleanliness to this vital pedestrian link.
Issues
●Animal and Waste Issues: Wide bollard gaps allow cattle entry, resulting in trapped animals and dung accumulation. Additionally, garbage is frequently dumped from the flyover. ●Safety and Access: Opaque fencing and poor lighting create an unsafe environment. Meanwhile, full encroachment on the west-side footpath eliminates pedestrian access to the structure.
