Priority Interventions

  • Streetscapes: Introduce permeable paving, shaded seating, lighting, and artistic wayfinding along 4th Cross and 4th Main Roads, ensuring universal accessibility.

  • Shared Market: Transform 5th Cross into a "woonerf-style" street with slow-moving traffic, dedicated vending bays, and solar-powered shaded structures.

  • Plaza Reclamation: Remove fences to create an open plaza with softscapes, movable furniture, and a stage for weekly farmers' markets.

  • Amenities: Install a public toilet at the playground to support recreational and community use.

Site context

This 500m stretch includes 5th Cross (a market street by a playground), 4th Cross, and 4th Main. It surrounds the former Arakere MICO bus stand, now featuring a children’s park, urban square, and Bangalore One. While the playground draws residents of all ages, especially on weekends, the lively market area struggles with heavy vehicular traffic. Improved seating and hygiene would significantly enhance this high-traffic community space.

Issues

  • The urban square is fenced with unnecessarily high barriers and remains unused for most of the year. Both the building and the shipping container inside also lie disused.

  • The 6th cross junction is considered dangerous for pedestrians due to the intersection geometry and the lack of safe crossing infrastructure.

  • The footpaths are narrow, broken in places and lined with vehicular parking.
