Priority Interventions
Redesign the entire underpass area and entry junctions on both sides, prioritising traffic calming, safe pedestrian movement, improved bus stop access, and effective use of the undeveloped railway buffer area.
Regulate entry roads from nearby residential areas into the junction and underpass to reduce traffic conflicts.
Enhance safety by installing improved lighting, CCTV cameras, and clear signage.
Plant suitable bamboo species in unused areas to help reduce pollution.
Site context
Srirampura Railway Crossing was a vibrant link and social space between Srirampura, Venkateshpura, Sampigehalli, and Jakkur villages. The site consists of the railway underpass and junctions on either side of it. The connects Bellary Road in the west and Thanissandra Road in the east. Due to the topographical condition, vehicles have to take a long and steep U-turn to cross the underpass. Owing to the difficulty of the underpass, pedestrians often walk across the unprotected railway line.
Issues
Due to the recently constructed underpass, the Venkateshpura and Sampigehalli villages were cut off from Sriramrampura and the villages in Jakkur. There is no safe pedestrian crossing at the junction and underpass, forcing people to wade through heavy traffic. Several residential roads open directly into the underpass area, with 2-way traffic flow, creating an extremely hazardous environment. The junction area on both sides (MCECHS Layout and Jakkur) is completely undeveloped with ill-defined road geometries, a lack of any pedestrian crossings, no signals, street lights or signage.
