The Railway Parallel Pedestrian Link

Area / Length:

-

Main access road:

Railway Parallel Road

Nominee:

Vishranthi Trust

Budget

50-100 lakhs

Priority Interventions

To revitalise the area, the proposed interventions include constructing a dedicated pedestrian path along the railway parallel road to ensure safe access to the Old Madras Road (OMR) commercial zones, the complete removal of persistent garbage and construction rubble to beautify the currently defunct site. Additionally, clearing illegal encroachments will restore the roadway’s capacity, significantly improving traffic flow and overall connectivity.

Site context

The site is a critical segment along the Railway Parallel Road in Benniganahalli, serving as a vital link for residents attempting to access commercial centres on Old Madras Road (OMR). Currently a defunct stretch, it sits at a strategic junction of residential movement and high-speed transit, demanding a transition from a neglected infrastructure edge to a safe, walkable neighbourhood corridor.

Issues

The stretch is plagued by a lack of formal walking infrastructure, forcing pedestrians into hazardous road conditions and discouraging non-motorised transport. This is compounded by ongoing illegal waste dumping and construction rubble, which make the area unhygienic. Furthermore, defunct open spaces have been occupied by unauthorised parking and hawkers, effectively narrowing the carriageway and disrupting both traffic flow and pedestrian continuity.
