Reclaiming the Transit Void in Doddanakundi

Area / Length:

3675 sqm

Main access road:

ORR Doddanekundi

Nominee:

Doddanekundi Rising

Budget

50-100 lakhs

Priority Interventions

This project transforms the underutilised space under the flyover into a vibrant public asset. Residual areas will be assessed and then repurposed for mobility or public spaces. Interventions include: designated parking zones, prioritising pedestrian and cyclist safety through a junction redesign. The remaining spaces will host public toilets, exhibition areas, and art installations, all while integrating Karnataka’s rich heritage into the aesthetic.

Site context

Doddankeundi junction is a busy intersection with significant vehicular, pedestrian, and cycling traffic. The under-flyover space is mostly vacant, with occasional garbage accumulation. Parking available (between Pillar 10-14) in a few segments; a working public toilet; a cabin for pourakarmikas; two disused bus stops; and some landscaped areas. DULT has already created a proposal to redesign the junction, which is yet to be implemented.

Issues

This underutilised 600m x 6m site sits within a high-traffic, dense junction plagued by neglect. Pedestrian and non-motorised transit infrastructure is absent, creating significant safety risks. The area’s vulnerability is worsened by poor lighting and scattered garbage-dumping sites. These factors collectively undermine mobility and safety, transforming a strategic urban asset into a hazardous, neglected corridor.
