Priority Interventions
To enhance the inclusivity of the food street, the proposed interventions include:
Installing ramps and repairing tactile paving to ensure that people with disabilities can access all shops.
A critical component involves negotiating shop spillover and pavement vending to maintain a clear, unobstructed path along the tactile markers.
Additionally, the plan calls for the integration of increased seating options specifically designed for the elderly and persons with disabilities, providing essential rest points throughout the commercial stretch.
Site context
This popular food street at V.V Puram was recently redesigned to better reflect its character. While the footpaths are intended to accommodate pedestrians, shop spillover has significantly reduced their usable width.
Issues
The street is currently hindered by significant accessibility barriers, as the lack of ramps at the footpath entrance and exit makes the area inaccessible to people with disabilities.
Street vendors also obstruct the existing tactile paving markers, rendering them ineffective for visually impaired pedestrians.
Furthermore, the absence of public benches leaves visitors with no designated areas to sit, rest, or eat, further diminishing the street's inclusivity and comfort.
