Site context

The site is a T-junction tucked away from the main road. It is marked by 3 key elements: (1) Aavishkar Academy (school) located at the junction, (2) a temple with a katte, (3) a small ‘public’ plot at the corner of the junction that is supposedly encroached by a private individual.

Issues

  • Parking and abandoned cars are left all around the junction and access road, reducing space for pedestrians and vehicles.

  • Footpaths are dirty, broken, and blocked by parked cars, and encroached by shops and vendors.

  • During school timings - morning and afternoon, pedestrians and vehicles spill over around the junction.

  • No dedicated parking or drop-off and pick-up zones for school children

  • Public urination is also an issue owing to the blank walls on the road.

Priority Interventions

Follow the Safe Routes to School guidelines for Aavishkar Academy to introduce pedestrian safety infrastructure.

  1. Create a clear drop-off and pick-up zone, and time-based vehicle parking.

  2. Create continuous footpaths on both sides of the Karumari Amman Koil Road.

  3. Remove abandoned cars and garbage littered

  4. At the Junction: add crossings, traffic-calming measures, and signage

To be checked

There is a plot at the junction where a citizen is allegedly encroaching. The person has built walls and created fraudulent documentation. Communities want to reclaim that space for public use. Check ownership
