Site context

The site is the path between the railway track to Mantri Square Sampige metro station that connects Swatantra Palya and Malleswaram. The path is frequented by people going to work, using the metro station or taking the bus. Along the site after the railway tracks is a low-income community, a large parking lot, and an under-metro space also used for parking. The public space terminates into a rajakaluve, and the series of bus stops on Sampige road.

Issues

There is no overpass at this site, forcing people to walk across the tracks, which is extremely unsafe. The path is steep, muddy, littered with garbage and has no street lights. The parking lot has old cars dumped here, along with large waste black spots.

Priority Interventions

There are 5 key interventions:

  1. Addition of a railway overhead pedestrian bridge with lifts connecting the two neighbourhoods.

  2. Build a footpath connection from the Swatantra Palya to the overhead bridge and from the bridge to the Mantri Square road junction.

  3. Reclaim the open dumping space to create play, social infrastructure and amenities for the low-income housing adjacent to the site.

  4. Organise under the flyover space and road edge to create a safe space for pedestrians to wait for buses and autos, hawkers and drop-off areas.

  5. Strategic NBS interventions to address sight and smell from the Rajakaluve.
