Site context

The T-junction is located at the intersection of the gate to Rajarajeshwari Nagar and Mysore Road. Its complexity stems from the sheer scale of the junction, with 2 transit nodes (Rajarjeshwari Nagar Metro Station and inter- and intra-city bus stops) and a mall (Gopalan) located at the junction. There is also an incomplete flyover at the south intersection. As a result, there is heavy vehicular traffic throughout the day. Pedestrians crossing the junction include mall visitors, intercity travellers carrying bags and suitcases, and students heading to nearby colleges.

Issues

  • There are no pedestrian crossings or signals, so pedestrians must run across the large junction to navigate fast-moving traffic.

  • No navigation information for various destinations and the different transit users.

  • Footpaths are extremely narrow, broken, and do not have sufficient capacity to accommodate pedestrian flows.

Priority Interventions

  1. Redesign of the junction to create more pedestrian refuge islands that enable easier and safer crossing.

  2. Addition of pedestrian safety infrastructure, including crossings, pedestrian signals, kerb ramps, etc.

  3. Installation of navigation and information signage at the junction and the multi-model transit nodes.

  4. Complete development of wide and universally accessible footpaths all around the junction.
