Importance of the site

The space under the ITC flyover on Pottery Road is currently being misused as a garbage segregation point, leading to serious hygiene issues, foul odour, and a growing rodent problem. This not only affects the health and quality of life of residents but also damages the aesthetic and civic pride of Cooke Town—a neighbourhood known for its greenery, heritage, and community spirit. Transforming this underutilized space into a productive community asset will directly benefit residents. One immediate and practical solution is to create a structured mini market here, where footpath vendors can be relocated. This would not only decongest our walkways but also provide these vendors a dignified, organized space to earn their livelihood—creating a win-win for all. Beyond a market, the space could also be used as: A shaded seating zone for senior citizens A small urban nursery for plants and composting A public art and mural wall to showcase local talent and history A mobile library or community notice board This project has the potential to convert a public nuisance into a point of pride, fostering safety, cleanliness, and stronger local engagement.

Proposed idea / vision:

At the Cooke Town Residents Association (CTRA), our vision for the space under the ITC flyover is rooted in transforming it from a neglected and unsanitary zone into a vibrant, inclusive, and multi-use public asset. We imagine this space as a structured, clean, and accessible community hub—designed for the people, by the people. Our primary proposal is to create a Mini Market Zone where local footpath vendors can be officially relocated. This not only provides them with dignity and structure but also clears our pavements for pedestrians—ensuring inclusive urban mobility for the elderly, children, and people with disabilities. In addition to the market, our vision includes: Eco-Zone & Community Garden: A small green patch with vertical planters, compost bins, and a space for environmental education. Senior Citizen Seating Bay: With benches, lighting, and shade to ensure comfort and safety. Youth Wall / Public Art Space: A curated mural or wall where students and local artists can display art, bringing vibrancy and pride. CTRA Info & Help Kiosk: A notice board with community updates, helpline numbers, and civic information. Zero-Garbage Model Zone: A model initiative showcasing waste segregation, reuse ideas, and sustainability in action. Impact: Public Health: Removal of garbage piles improves hygiene and reduces disease risk. Safety: Better lighting and active use reduce antisocial activities. Environment: Green initiatives promote sustainability and climate resilience. Inclusion: Vendors, seniors, children, and all residents get their own space within a shared community zone. This is not just a beautification project—it’s an opportunity to demonstrate what participative, people-led urban transformation looks like. We’re ready to lead it.
