Importance of the site

This underutilized space beneath the Jayanagara Metro has the potential to serve sanitation workers and garbage pickers who operate in harsh and often unsafe urban conditions. These workers currently lack access to clean rest areas, toilets, and basic infrastructure. By developing this site, we can create a much-needed pause point that supports their dignity, well-being, and productivity. It also activates an otherwise neglected urban void, making it safer and more welcoming for the surrounding community.

Proposed idea / vision:

The vision is to create a modular, shaded rest zone equipped with amenities such as toilets, drinking water, lockers, and changing rooms for sanitation workers. To increase public presence and safety, the space can also host a few hawker stalls or kiosks, bringing life and informal activity to the area. These interventions will promote inclusion by addressing the needs of an underserved group, improve public health through access to hygiene facilities, and enhance environmental sustainability through smart water reuse systems. Ultimately, the space will become a functional and humane part of the neighbourhood that supports both rest and livelihood.
