Importance of the site

This space is on the periphery of the Defence colony cricket ground, the only unpaved, free-to-use public playground in the area. It is marred by garbage dumping, urination, haphazard auto and car parking and anti-social elements. Thus, an area meant for children and young adults, is jeopardized due to low maintenance, lack of hygiene and lack of social surveillance. This area has a potential to be developed into a safe, hygenic and vibrant public space with basic amenities like public toilet and katte.

Proposed idea / vision:

The location is suitable for a public toilet, since there is no public toilet in the vicinity. The public toilet is designed for easy accessibility with ramps and signage. It has ample natural light and ventilation to make the users comfortable and the place hygienic. The material palette is such that it is easy to maintain, durable as well as aesthetic. The 2 kattes, in conjunction with this toilet become akin to an urban lounge, encouraging children, families and passers-by to lounge and relax. This provides social surveillance, making the public-place safe. Public toilets often become urban eye-soars. However, this design reimagines a public toilet and amenities around it as a vibrant public space, fostering a sense of neighborhood.
