Importance of the site

This space is at a very important junction between Indiranagar 100 feet road and Chinmaya Mission Hospital road, with a large pedestrian population of commuters, including women and children. The bus stop here is very busy and lacks sufficient waiting space. In spite of having large shady trees, there is limited seating space, inconveniencing users of bus stop as well those visiting the Nandini milk booth, HOPCOMS, and other shops nearby. If this area is developed, it will provide an urban public space for waiting for the neighborhood residents, pedestrians, shoppers, autorickshaw and cab drivers and commuters.

Proposed idea / vision:

This public space has been re-imagined as a network of linear kattes with shading canopies. The large rain trees shade the platforms/kattes under, while for the bus stop and waiting area, a sloping shade of built canopy provides respite from sun and rain. The built canopies are mounted with solar panels, thereby powering lights within. The framework of the canopy responds to the solar panel sizes. The canopy structure is in metal fabrication, easy to erect and maintain. Canopy eaves acts as a surface for bus announcements and for government advertisements. The kattes allows for seating from both sides, however its width is such that it doesn’t inhibit large pedestrian movement on the footpath. Varying levels as well as large surface allow for multiple ways to use the kattes. A plaque bearing horticultural information forms a part of the katte composition, thus educating the users about the road-side trees in the garden city of Benglauru. Material palette of Sadarhalli grey granite and IPS oxide / Epoxy flooring is durable and maintenance friendly. This design will provide a safe, hygienic and comfortable public space for the neighborhood residents, shoppers, autorickshaw drivers and commuters.
