Importance of the site
Mathikere Junction is a major 4-way intersection that connects multiple important urban corridors — including access to Ramaiah College, Hebbal, JP Park, and several local schools and institutions. The junction also feeds into three dense pocket roads which serve as critical neighborhood connectors.
During peak hours, the junction sees high pedestrian footfall — with more than 100 pedestrians, including students, crossing simultaneously. However, the current layout is unsafe and poorly managed, lacking adequate crossing infrastructure, pedestrian priority, or traffic calming.
2. Vision Statement
To transform Mathikere Junction into a safe, inclusive, and vibrant multimodal node by applying tactical urbanism principles and pedestrian-first design strategies — making it a gateway to safe streets, better connectivity, and active mobility for the neighborhood.
Proposed idea / vision:
Objectives
• Improve safety and comfort for pedestrians and cyclists at the junction.
• Restore pedestrian crossings and signals to guide safe and efficient movement.
• Create seamless non-motorized connectivity from Mathikere Junction to JP Park (~1.5 km).
• Encourage modal shift toward walking and cycling by improving infrastructure and user experience.
• Establish a model for low-cost, high-impact tactical interventions in urban mobility planning.
4. Proposed Interventions
A. Junction Redesign and Tactical Interventions
• High-visibility zebra crossings on all four sides of the junction using thermoplastic paint or tactical surface patterns.
• Installation of temporary curb extensions (using paint + planters or bollards) to reduce turning radii and increase pedestrian refuge space.
• Pedestrian crossing signals to be restored or installed with proper signal cycles and countdown timers.
• Tactical street painting to define walking/cycling priority zones and visually narrow motor lanes.
• Speed calming measures like rumble strips or raised crossings at entry points.
