Importance of the site

Recently, a flyover was constructed, and road widening was done at the Hegde Nagar junction, severing the extremely busy, low-profile shopping area, and completely disrupting the organic social fabric, character, safety, etc. of the area. Low-income and lower- middle-class people dominate the area under consideration, necessitating the provision of safe footpaths, bus shelters, and other essential amenities. New eateries have opened that do not manage their garbage, resulting in unmanaged waste dumps posing serious health hazards. Our intervention for this site is to ensure a clean, safe, pleasing, and social streetscape and neighborhood for the residents.

Proposed idea / vision:

The proposal aims to transform a busy stretch of Thanisandra Main Road into a safer, more inclusive, and pedestrian-friendly streetscape. This vibrant corridor is used daily by a wide range of people, including students, traders, shopkeepers, and members of the lower middle-class community. However, it currently faces challenges like heavy traffic, poor walkability, and a lack of safe pedestrian infrastructure. Therefore, the proposed changes focus on easing congestion, improving safety, creating a more welcoming environment that supports both community interaction and local businesses, and overall, improving the quality of life in the area. Key ideas: • Redesigning pathways keeping in mind the user groups, namely students, vendors, shoppers, and parents or guardians. • Revamping the bus stop near RKH 1st Main Road, which currently does not have a shelter and a broken bus stop signage. • The design also considers the needs of those who spend time waiting along the road, such as commuters, shoppers, and others, by adding shaded seating, designated waiting areas, and clear, accessible pathways that make the street feel more organized and comfortable. • Benches and other waiting spaces near the school provide a space for parents to wait for their children during school pickup and drop-off. • Dedicated spaces for street vendors will help sustain local livelihoods while also making the street more organized and reducing traffic congestion. Dustbins: to be provided near eateries and other establishments to prevent food waste from being thrown on the streets, inviting rodents and other pests. This practice also improves public health at large. • Provision for public toilet and drinking water: next to the local ’Indira canteen’ caters to the needs of the lower middle class, especially drivers, peons, and other helpers who work in and around the area. • Basic amenities such as functional streetlights, cameras for safety, dustbins to prevent garbage accumulation, artfully done zebra crossings are provided to promote their usage, and dustbins throughout the street to prevent garbage accumulation. • Interactive Street Art for Kids near Hegde Nagar Public School entrance informally dedicates the school access space to parents and children. • Wall Murals on 2nd Cross Road: The murals painted on the boundary wall of the police quarters and the opposite side infuse vibrancy into an otherwise narrow, garbage-laden street. They form part of a broader effort to revive 2nd Cross Road—currently misused as a dump yard where trash is frequently burned. • Percolation Pits: around trees present on either side of the street help in recharging groundwater while also providing a natural, non-cemented base for trees to grow. • Dividers: Several segments along the central spine of Thanisandra Main Road feature broken medians or poorly maintained plants. Revamping the dividers on the street with wide dividers housing locally available plants helps in adding pockets of greenery to an otherwise concrete-heavy city. • Zebra crossings at key points enhance traffic flow and ensure safer pedestrian movement. • Benches and shaded seating: near existing trees offer comfortable resting spaces for commuters and patrons of the establishments nearby. • Auto Stands: near RKH 1st Main Road provide easy and enhanced access for patrons visiting the establishments and auto drivers waiting for their next ride. • The proposed interventions along Thanisandra Main Road, in front of the Sampigehalli Police Station, aim to improve pedestrian safety, comfort, and environmental quality. Zebra crossings at key points, a roundabout at the southern intersection collectively enhance traffic flow and ensure safer pedestrian movement. Benches and shaded seating near existing trees offer comfortable resting spaces, while dustbins help maintain cleanliness. Birds perch along the sidewalk to support urban biodiversity. These interventions together create a safer, cleaner, and more inclusive public space. • The proposed interventions for the underutilized footpath outside Sampigehalli police station, aims to promote community interaction. Benches for seating, dustbins by the corner near the coconut vendor, percolation pits around trees etc. • Dustbins near eateries and other establishments to prevent food wastage from being thrown on the streets inviting rodents and other pests. This also improves public health at large. • We also to propose to provide other basic amenities such as functional street lights, cameras for safety, dustbins to prevent garbage accumulation, artfully done zebra crossings to promote their usage, dustbins throughout the street to prevent garbage acclamation and and reviving of 2nd across Road abutting the police quarters which is currently being used as a dumpyard where trash is burned.
