Importance of the site
It is important to develop this space because the lives of people here are at direct and immediate risk, given their location in an extremely low-lying area. Every monsoon, families face flooding, collapsing roofs cause fatalities, the inaccessible location cutx-off access to hospitals - all leading to heightened exposure to climate-induced disasters. By prioritizing the upgradation of basic infrastructure—such as drainage systems, roads, and retaining walls—this project does far more than offer passive improvements; it actively safeguards lives and significantly enhances everyday living conditions.
Beyond disaster resilience, Durasti is rooted in a bottom-up approach, where residents are directly involved in reimagining and rebuilding their shared commons. This participatory process not only fosters a strong sense of belonging but also lays the foundation for long-term collaboration across varied stakeholders and ensures community-led governance.
Proposed idea / vision:
Our vision is to transform this vulnerable and disconnected settlement into a safe, resilient, and inclusive neighbourhood—not just through physical upgrades, but by embedding community-led resilience at the core of the process.
The design goes beyond spatial intervention—it builds systems of collaboration, self-governance, and collective care. For example, local community-based organizations (CBOs) are actively involved in training women to read maps, maintain infrastructure ledgers, and participate in monitoring and maintenance. This not only strengthens their role in public decision-making but also equips them with transferable skills, opening up future livelihood opportunities.
An architecture consultancy provides technical oversight, while CSR funds can be leveraged to support the work of local CBOs. This multi-stakeholder model, grounded in community participation, ensures that implementation is both context-sensitive and sustainable. By centering the community throughout the process, the project enables residents to shift from being passive recipients to active custodians of their own neighbourhood.
