Importance of the site
The selected area beneath the Hebbal bridge is a critical transit node and a hub of constant vehicular congestion. Despite its importance for connectivity, it severely lacks safe and accessible infrastructure for pedestrians. People are often forced to navigate through fast-moving traffic just to cross or wait, putting their safety at daily risk. Developing this space would not only improve pedestrian safety but also transform a chaotic junction into a functional, inclusive, and livable public environment for the entire neighborhood.
Proposed idea / vision:
Our vision for the space beneath the Hebbal flyover is to transform it into a safe, inclusive, and vibrant public transit hub. Currently, the two bus stops—one before the flyover entrance and another after it—are separated by a short 120-meter stretch plagued by heavy traffic, constant honking, and unsafe pedestrian movement. Commuters are often forced to walk amidst fast-moving vehicles just to transfer between buses, which poses a serious threat to public safety and health.
A strategic intervention would be to relocate both bus stops to the unused space below the flyover. This would allow seamless integration of the two major transit lines—one from the Bengaluru-Hyderabad highway and the other from the Outer Ring Road—creating a central and sheltered interchange point.
This reimagined space could be designed to include:
-Clearly marked pedestrian paths with safety railings and calming elements
-Ample seating, shade, and lighting for comfort and accessibility
-Green landscaping to improve air quality and reduce the heat island effect
-Universal access features to support people with disabilities, children, and elderly
-Wayfinding systems and digital bus timetables to improve user experience
The impact would be profound:
-Improved safety and walkability
-Reduced pedestrian exposure to traffic pollution and noise
-Encouragement of public transit use through better connectivity
-Creation of a dignified, inclusive, and well-utilized public space beneath infrastructure that is otherwise neglected
This kind of intervention can turn a chaotic traffic point into a civic space that prioritizes people over vehicles and sets a precedent for similar transit nodes across the city.
